Please note Summer term closes on Wednesday 24th July. We wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable summer break and look forward to welcoming you back on Wednesday 04th September 2019.
Dear pupils and families
What an amazing start to the new school year.  The pupils and staff of this school never cease to make me proud.  We have welcomed in a lot of new pupils and many more have moved classes or key stages and yet here they are, after only a day, settled in and working hard.  I look forward to the year ahead very much.  Well done to each and every one of you.
Best wishes
Lucie Calow - Headteacher

KEY STAGE 3 ACTIVITIES WEEK 2019
What a great week our students have had, they visited Duxford Air Museum and Haverhill Arts centre for a cinema trip.  We had visits from the laughter specialists and a face painter and even enjoyed a MacDonald's lunch.  With over 70 meals ordered we certainly kept them on their toes that morning.  We had badge making and t-shirt printing which showed our students creative sides and the pyjama party at the end of the week was also a great success.
One of the highlights which both the staff and students have mentioned was the visit from a company called Anyone Can.  They visit schools to provide sport activities to all children whatever challenges they may face.  Our students were able to take part in football, wheelchair football, cricket and lots of other ball challenges and games.  We thoroughly enjoyed their visit and we hope to see more of them in the future.  We must take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of our staff for making this week such a success.

Look who came to visit, ARK FARM.
Our students were able to touch, feed and play with the animals which they thoroughly enjoyed.  Thank you Ark Farm for a great day, we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Duxford Visit

John one of our 6th Form students had the opportunity to visit Duxford Airfield RFFS (Fire station/crew) this week.  He was able to spend time with them asking questions about their equipment and routines and in return they provided him with information and advice about the Fire service to assist him with his studies in college, should he need it.  Thank you to everyone at Duxford Airfield RFFS for welcoming John, he had a great time.

At Granta we are extremely lucky to be able to support our students with swimming in our on-site Hydrotherapy pool. These sessions are loved by all that take part and it is great to see the interaction the children have with others whilst in the pool.

We love our visitors at Granta, Pat dog is a firm favourite with our students, and the Laughter Specialists visits and interaction with the children is great to see.

CONGRATULATIONS to our 6th formers, Willow, Jordan, Grace, Joseph, Cameron and Tobie who went to Gretton school on 26th March and took part in the Cambridgeshire County Table Cricket Championships.  The team won both of the matches against Castle school and Gretton School to become County champions.  They are now going on to play in the Regional championships at Newmarket on Thursday 16th May and we wish them the best of luck.  Watch this space for further updates.

Creative Arts Week  04th - 8th March 2019
This has been a very successful week and the children have had great fun involving themselves in the activities we have had on offer.  Please see below some of the great work that has taken place and further pictures can be found in our Gallery under Creative Arts Week 2019

World Book Day
Granta hosted a World book Space themed dressing up day on 07th March 2018, as part of creative week in March.  Children were encouraged to come to school as their favourite Space character with the inspiration taken from the book "Aliens Love Underpants"
Our very own Deputy head Sarah has embraced the theme this year, dressed as an astronaut who has lost her rocket, the children have been helping her to find it around the school.   We also launched a space rocket with the help of the children counting down to lift off, which was great fun for all to watch.

During the sixth-form activity week we had a very special guest, Wayne Barrow, who is a TV/radio presenter and Youtube phenomenon with his BSL signing videos.  We recorded a video 'This Is Me' featuring Wayne and our students and are really excited about sharing their amazing experience.  Watch and enjoy!! (please note: you may have to accept cookies to watch)

Head Teacher Lucie Calow met Prince Edward during a visit to Suffolk.  Prince Edward was visiting Castle Manor School in Haverhill and also local leaders for the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.  Since 2010 Granta students have achieved over 30 bronze, over 20 silver and an amazing 13 Gold awards.

Duke of Edinburgh Challenges 2019
Another year and another set of trips for students to complete their practice and assessed Bronze, Silver and Gold DofE challenges.  We are very pleased to report all of our children passed with flying colours and you can see from the photos they had a fantastic time.  The weather may have dampened the ground but it certainly did not dampen their spirits.
We must say a huge thank you to everyone who gave up their time to ensure these trips were successful and in helping our children pass their awards.
Mascot BOB
Meet Bob our DofE mascot, he has thoroughly enjoyed his time with the students on their DofE challenges and they certainly had fun filming him.

The Youth Arts Fest 2019, which was held at Linton Village College, was a great success.  Our art exhibition was available to view and enterprise work our pupils have been involved in was sold.  We held workshops for visitors who wished to make their own cards using our wooden hand carving blocks and  Digital artwork, a soundscape and two videos made by Granta students were projected regularly during the day.  There were also exhibitions of art from LVC, Linton Heights, Linton Infants, Meadow Balsham and Abington schools along with musical and drama performances.   Refreshments including a BBQ, strawberries and cream and cream teas were enjoyed by all.  Thank you to everyone that was able to attend, we are hoping to make this an annual event.

FOGS Donation

We would like to express our thanks to FOGS for their support with our BOCCIA t-shirts. Our six form students are travelling to Harlow at the end of this month to compete in the Regional BOCCIA finals.  With the help of FOGS providing the funding we have been able to obtain printed t-shirts for our Team.  We wish them the best of luck and look forward to sharing their results with you.

Work Experience
We offer our students the opportunity to undertake high quality and meaningful work experience as part of their post 16 education.  We have links with local businesses and offer placements with Prospects Trust, Rowan Humberstone, Ickworth Park, Audley End, REACH Foodbank, Linton Zoo and Addenbrookes café.  These experiences give our students the opportunity to enhance the skills they have developed within the school environment.  The children certainly enjoy their time out on work experience!

Teepee Project.

Students in our 6th Form had a wonderful idea of building a teepee for somewhere to sit and "wow their mates" they said.

This was built during the summer term, by students within our 6th Form, using pallets.  They took the pallets apart with a special pallet buster, sanded them down then built them up to make the finished product.

We were very lucky to have the help and support of Toby Reynolds Family, who put in the concrete base and the basic structure.  They also kindly donated the paint, which during the Autumn term was put to good use.

Pupil Achievements:

#Well done to Finley & Kieran who gained 2nd prize with their 'snake skin' microscope image in the science competition run by MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology.

Boccia Regional Finals February 2019
Following on from their win at the Boccia finals last year, Granta's team have now competed at the recently held Boccia Regional finals.
Georgia, Maddie, Grace, Jamie, Catherine, Jordan, and Gabby played amazingly well taking third place in the finals and managing to place themselves as the Top team in the league for Cambridge overall.
Well done team.

Panathlon Regional Finals

Students from our six form have taken part in a Panathlon and made it through to the recently held regional finals in Harlow.   Our team of students won all of their Boccia games, along with competing in wheelchair and running races, table cricket, Polly Bat and Bean bag throwing.  We are very excited to report Granta won a Silver Medal!   Congratulations Team what a Fantastic achievement.

Pen Pals

Our students in Hawking class have been given an opportunity to have pen pals with a group of KS4 students at Highfield Academy, Ely.  They were very excited to receive their first letters and learn all about their pen pals.  Our students then used their English lessons to compose, draft and redrafted their replies.  They were able to use their knowledge of letter writing features to help.  Once the letters were ready and envelopes had been addressed; the whole class walked to the local post box in Linton to post them.  They are very much looking forward to receiving further correspondence and continuing with their letter writing in the future.
