Granta Mosaic

18th February 2015

The mosaic has been constructed under the supervision of artist Tyrel Broadbent and kindly paid for by South Cambs DFAS and the Welding Institute.  The design is a landscape symbolising the area around Linton including the two giants Gog and Magog and the nymph Granta in her Grotto. The two giants are outlines which lie within the colours of the field/hedge/wood lines and patterns. There are bats, an owl, a bird, a sheep and it even includes the Granta School logo hidden within the design.  Students throughout the school have worked with Tyrel within their class groups sorting the tiles and sticking them onto the mural itself.  Tyrel has been in school since September 2014.

The finished mosaic was unveiled on 26th February.

It was my very great pleasure to assist school council in officially unveiling the mosaic. Nazir pulled the curtain open whilst artist Tyrol Broadbent looked on. This is an important piece of local art and reflects the local story of the gog magog giants. All the pupils and staff have contributed to its making (including my 3 squares in a hand) and pupils learnt directly from the artist himself. This project has been the culmination of much support from all charities involved and our Art Teacher Sarah Hanagan who co-ordinated work within school.
